The Original Spirit and
Three Miracles of Temple Brith Achim

Shirley Kantor

We started as young families all strapped for money. We wanted a Jewish home for our children and our families. Sharing, caring and above all always putting the needs of the community ahead of personal desires was the unwritten understanding. We worked hard and played hard. As a result of this spirit we were blessed in many ways. So our miracles started…..

When the building was first constructed, we were always short of money and, things were budgeted very closely. My husband, Harvey Kantor, along with many hard working people, were involved with the planning and budgeting.

It was an exciting time. We were going to have our first High Holiday Service in our own home but we had to have the driveway paved. There was only enough money to do a small paving job and so the contractor was given very specific instructions as to where to pave and how to limit the job. The parking lot was to be stones until we could get enough money to finish the job.

One day, while driving down the street in front of the building, my husband noticed that the entire parking lot was paved! He almost hit a tree while driving. I remember him storming in the house upset because there was no money to complete the job. He called all the board members and anyone who might know what happened. Finally, we learned what really happened. The paving contractor was a very religious Catholic man and knew we were getting ready for High Holiday Services. He told us that the night before he came to do the paving, an angel visited him while he was sleeping and asked him to do the entire job so the members of Temple Brith Achim would not get hurt walking to the Temple to pray. It was his gift to us. WOW!!
