TBA Tales: No Job Too Small! Harold Sheinbach

The High Holidays were almost upon us and we had just finished building the Temple. I was President of TBA during the fund raising and the actual building of the Temple. Having called upon the members to make such substantial financial sacrifices I couldn't bring myself to ask for more contributions to pay for the final clean up. Instead, I asked for volunteers. My request resulted in a tremendous turnout of men, women and children, virtually the entire congregation. Each of us just gravitated to do part of the work, some outside and some inside. Along with a crew of men and women, I worked outside clearing the vegetation and debris around the Temple.
When we had been working for some time an older grandmother, Edith Saks (may she rest in peace) came running out of the building screaming at the top of her lungs "The children!! The children!!". I frantically rushed over with great concern only to hear her tell me in the loudest voice "The children are cleaning the toilets." She was so astonished that the children had voluntarily assumed the job of cleaning the toilets that she rushed out to tell the parents.
That was the feeling that pervaded the membership at the time. We were so proud of having achieved the goal of building the Temple that no duty, large or small, was too much for us. I doubt if any parent who was present that day was not extremely proud of their children, and the love they expressed for their new Temple by voluntarily assuming some of the least desirable cleaning jobs.
